چکیده

Woodc:n poles are popular structural elements currently used by Manitoba Hydro for distribution lines and transmission towers. In recent years, a considerable number of such poles have failed duc to heavy build-up of ice on the lines. These failures may be attributed to the accuracy or reliability of the design methods and/or to the lack of adequate experimental information to evaluate the critical buckling strength of these poles. An experimental program, sponsored by Manitoba Hydro, was undertaken at the University of Manitoba to determine the behaviour and the load-carrying capacity of wooden poles. The poles were tested in a horizontal position, using a testing frame specially designed and built for this testing program. This paper presents the results of the experimental program of 58 test samples originated from ten poles representing two different wood species. The measured buckling strengths were compared to the predicted values based on the Canadian standard and three other existing models.

Nonlinear buckling behaviour of spherical shells: barriers and symmetry-breaking dimples.

The nonlinear axisymmetric post-buckling behaviour of perfect, thin, elastic spherical shells subject to external pressure and their asymmetric bifurcations are characterized, providing results for a structure/loading combination with an exceptionally nonlinear buckling response. Immediately after the onset of buckling, the buckling mode localizes into a dimple at the poles. The relations among...

Vibration and Buckling Analysis of Functionally Graded Flexoelectric Smart Beam

In this paper, the buckling and vibration behaviour of functionally graded flexoelectric nanobeam is examined. The vibration and buckling formulations of functionally graded nanobeam are developed by using a new theory that’s presented exclusively for flexoelecteric nano-materials. So by considering Von-Karman strain and forming enthalpy equation based on displacement, polarization and electric...

NONLINEAR POST-BUCKLING ANALYSIS OF ISOTROPIC PLATES BY USING FINITE STRIP METHODS

ABSTRACT This paper presents the theoretical developments of two finite strip methods (i.e. semi-analytical and full-analytical) for the post-buckling analysis of isotropic plates. In the semi-analytical finite strip approach, all the displacements are postulated by the appropriate shape functions while in the development process of the full-analytical approach, the Von-Karman’s equilibrium equ...

Biaxial Buckling and Bending of Smart Nanocomposite Plate Reinforced by CNTs using Extended Mixture Rule Approach

In this research, the buckling and bending behaviour of smart nanocomposite plate reinforced by single- walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under electro-magneto-mechanical loadings is studied. The extended mixture rule approach is used to determine the elastic properties of nanocomposite plate. Equilibrium equations of smart nanocomposite plate are derived using the Hamilton’s principle based on ...

Investigation of leakage current flow through wooden poles structures on overhead distribution system

Insulation degradation leading to leakage current flow through the high voltage insulator is a major problem faced by various power distribution utilities. The excessive leakage current flow into the wooden supporting structures (wooden cross-arm and pole) leads to pole-top fires and subsequently power cut-off. Most prior researchers focused on flashover phenomena of insulators rather than inve...
